Dementia Action Week 2019

Formerly Dementia Awareness Month, this year Dementia Australia is holding Dementia Action Week from the 16 to 22 September to include World Alzheimer's Day on the 21 September.

Dementia is a disorder affecting the brain including thinking, behaviour and other daily abilities.  There are several types of dementia including Alzheimer’s disease, Vascular dementia, Huntington’s disease and more.  It is important that you seek a medical diagnosis for any symptoms of Dementia.  Early signs include:

  • Progressive and frequent memory loss
  • Confusion
  • Personality change
  • Apathy and withdrawal
  • Loss of ability to perform everyday tasks

Though dementia is commonly associated as an old person’s disease, it is in fact able to affect people as young as 40 years of age.  Dementia can be a very daunting experience as it begins to occur - for both the patient and their family.  Not being able to understand why these changes are happening can be confusing.

However, it is important to remember that your doctor can offer support and help create plans moving forward that can support you. If you would like to find out more information, please speak to your doctor by making an appointment on (07) 4635 6111.
