Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a chronic lung condition. Similar to asthma, COPD is a more constant wheezing and tightness in your chest and includes a cough. Asthma, however, is more infrequent in its symptoms.
A COPD action plan helps you to recognise when your symptoms change and what action you should take. It is essential that you plan it with your doctor and review the information regularly.
If you suffer a COPD episode, it is important to remember to use your reliever medications and continue to use a preventer. If your symptoms continue you should seek medical attention from your doctor.
As winter approaches there is a rise in COPD episodes, but these can be reduced by ensuring you have your flu and pneumonia injections, stay hydrated and warm, avoid people who are sick, wash your hands regularly, avoid smoke and fumes and remember to exercise regularly. It is recommended that if you suffer from COPD that you exercise for at least 150 minutes (2.5 hours) per week.
